Changing Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease Dynamics Through Time in Montastraea cavernosa

چکیده
Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) is affecting corals across the Western Atlantic and displays species-specific regional differences in prevalence, incidence, degree of mortality, lesion morphology. We examined two Florida sites with different temporal histories emergence; Fort Lauderdale where SCTLD endemic Lower Keys has recently emerged. Our objectives were to (1) assess potential impact on overall reef condition by surveying reefs each region, (2) a single common species, Montastraea cavernosa , examine colony morphology (3) look for contagion conducting transmission experiments using lesions from region. Reef surveys found both regions had low cover, high algae similar species composition. prevalence was higher than at M. S. siderea dominated smaller colonies (<5 cm) whereas larger occurred Keys. Tagged SCTLD-affected followed 2 years one site In years, showed declining mainly bleached spots lacking loss. contrast, tagged first year maintained 100% predominantly no edges. However, dynamics changed, showing switched mixture polyps or without Lesion significant predictor amount Aquaria studies rate zones (emergent endemic) similar. study highlights that mortality are not necessarily linked host reflective subsequent change through time newly

Photoacclimatization by the coral Montastraea cavernosa in the mesophotic zone: light, food, and genetics.
Most studies on coral reefs have focused on shallow reef (< 30 m) systems due to the technical limitations of conducting scientific diving deeper than 30 m. Compared to their shallow-water counterparts, these mesophotic coral reefs (30-150 m) are understudied, which has slowed our broader understanding of the biodiversity, ecology, and connectivity of shallow and deep coral reef communities. We...
متن کاملCellular reactions to sedimentation and temperature stress in the Caribbean coral Montastraea cavernosa.
We present evidence of cellular responses to increased sedimentation and temperature in Montastraea cavernosa collected off Broward County, Florida. We sampled corals from six different sites approximately, 500-1000 m off shore, 10-15m depth. Six samples were collected from four sites adjacent to areas of underwater marine dredging (project sites), while the remaining two samples were obtained ...
متن کاملGenetic Structure in the Coral, Montastraea cavernosa: Assessing Genetic Differentiation among and within Mesophotic Reefs
Mesophotic coral reefs (30-150 m) have recently received increased attention as a potential source of larvae (e.g., the refugia hypothesis) to repopulate a select subset of the shallow water (<30 m) coral fauna. To test the refugia hypothesis we used highly polymorphic Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) markers as a means to assess small-scale genetic heterogeneity between geographic...
متن کاملMolecular basis and evolutionary origins of color diversity in great star coral Montastraea cavernosa (Scleractinia: Faviida).
Natural pigments are normally products of complex biosynthesis pathways where many different enzymes are involved. Corals and related organisms of class Anthozoa represent the only known exception: in these organisms, each of the host-tissue colors is essentially determined by a sequence of a single protein, homologous to the green fluorescent protein (GFP) from Aequorea victoria. This direct s...
متن کاملPopulation Structure of Montastraea cavernosa on Shallow versus Mesophotic Reefs in Bermuda
Mesophotic coral reef ecosystems remain largely unexplored with only limited information available on taxonomic composition, abundance and distribution. Yet, mesophotic reefs may serve as potential refugia for shallow-water species and thus understanding biodiversity, ecology and connectivity of deep reef communities is integral for resource management and conservation. The Caribbean coral, Mon...
